Huddersfield Tn v Charlton Ath Preview

Real belief that the current squad are a bit special was probably cemented back in November.

Having led the table for a while, suffering just that one defeat at Stevenage, Charlton faced a Huddersfield side defending an unbeaten league record of 43 games, that stretched back nearly a year.

Influential skipper, Johnnie Jackson, was injured and replaced by Hogan Ephraim. Darel Russel also came in to partner Danny Hollands. Sky viewers witnessed goals from Yann Kermorgant and Ephraim that brought Huddersfield’s impressive run to an end.

The Addicks have gone on to establish a clear lead at the top of the table while the Terriers have been in indifferent form, something that cost Lee Clark his job.

Recently, the Terriers pragmatic approach has seen them draw six of their last nine games, with two wins and just one defeat.

The jewel in the Huddersfield crown is prolific striker, Jordan Rhodes. Chris Powell will be hoping the young Scottish international is as quiet as he was at The Valley.

Powell made no further sortees into the loan market on deadline day, though Paul Hayes was recalled from Wycombe on deadline day and is likely to be on the bench at the Galpharm.

Ben Hamer will probably have the same back-four that faced Yeovil in front of him. Leon Cort had a fine game and his pace will be a useful asset to combat the threat of Rhodes.

The energy of Wagstaff will see him get the nod ahead of Danny Green on the right. Darel Russell has had a steadying influence in the middle of the park and will continue in tandem with Danny Hollands. Jackson is still unavailable so debut scorer, Dany N’Guessan will probably retain his place on the left, though Lee Cook will come into consideration.

Up front, Kermorgant and Wright-Phillips pick themselves, so Charlton could look something like this:

Hamer; Solly, Cort, Morrison, Wiggins; Wagstaff, Russell, Hollands, N’Guessan; Kermorgant, Wright-Phillips.

Subs: Sullivan, Taylor, Stephens, Cook, Hayes.

Carl Boyeson from East Yorkshire will be the referee and the Addicks will play in all red.

There were patches in the second half on Tuesday when the Charlton looked close to their form of earlier in the season. There were signs that they have turned the corner and Wright-Phillips’ welcome return to form is another boost.

Simon Grayson’s sides are always difficult to beat but this is a game the Terriers really need to win if they are to have a realistic chance of automatic promotion.

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Leyton Orient while city neighbours, Sheffield United, have a day off as scheduled opponents, Chesterfield, are involved in Sunday’s JPT final.

Chris Powell will probably be happy enough with a point but if Huddersfield play an expansive game as they chase the win they need, the Addicks may get the space they need to create some decent chances.

Victory for the Addicks is a distinct possibility.
